The storm discount lasted a weekend; Tuesday's power is €155

Germany's day-ahead price for Tuesday cleared at €155.11 per megawatt hour, a third above Monday and almost twelve times storm Sunday. The wind eased, gas came back, and the evening hour costs six times the midday one.

Monday’s average was €116.57 and storm Sunday’s €13.121. Desk arithmetic: Tuesday’s power costs about 33% more than Monday’s and almost twelve times Sunday’s.

Why it climbed. The wind dropped. Onshore turbines generated 688.8 gigawatt hours on Monday, against 1,009.2 GWh on Saturday and 1,020.0 GWh on Sunday1. Gas-fired plants generated 105.4 GWh on Monday, against 43.5 GWh on Sunday1. Desk arithmetic: onshore wind fell by about a third, and gas burn more than doubled. When gas sets the price, the price remembers what gas costs.

The shape of the day. Inside Tuesday the spread is wide. The cheapest hour, 12:00 to 13:00 CET, cleared at €43.50, when the sun helps; the dearest, 18:00 to 19:00 CET, at €262.19, after sunset1. Desk arithmetic: the evening hour costs about six times the midday one. Customers on a dynamic tariff will feel that directly; everyone else meets it later, averaged into the next tariff letter.

The month. From 1 to 27 October the daily price has averaged €154.431, almost exactly Tuesday’s level. The windy weekend was a dip, not a new floor. And the Deutscher Wetterdienst expects a strong blocking high over central Europe from Thursday, with stubborn fog and low cloud2. Calm, grey air is the weather in which batteries, interconnectors and flexible demand earn their keep.

None of that is a crisis. It is the system doing what it was built to do: price each hour honestly, so that someone has a reason to store, shift or build. Nothing here is investment advice.

What to watch

  • Wednesday's day-ahead average, which appears on SMARD once Tuesday's auction has cleared1.
  • The DWD expects a strong blocking high over central Europe from Thursday, with fog and low cloud2: quiet air, and usually little wind.
Desk comment

A storm can lower the price for a weekend. Only finished infrastructure lowers it for a winter.
