The chip maker vouches for its own chips

Three banks and Blackstone are putting $63 billion into a special vehicle that will buy Broadcom accelerators and lease them to Anthropic. The interesting line is who stands behind the hardware's value.

On Monday Bank of America, Blackstone, Citi and Morgan Stanley announced a $63 billion transaction to fund AI computing capacity for Anthropic built on Broadcom technology1. Deliveries are expected to start in calendar 20271.

The plumbing. The money goes into a newly formed special purpose vehicle. The vehicle buys Broadcom’s XPU accelerators and networking equipment and leases them to Anthropic1. Bank of America, Citi and Morgan Stanley arrange the first-lien financing; Blackstone is the sole provider of the committed second-lien portion1. Anthropic leases the capacity rather than buying it.

The line to read twice. Broadcom is “providing residual value support to the SPV for the amount equivalent to the first lien portion of the financing”1. In plain words: the chip maker stands behind what its own hardware will be worth, up to the size of the senior loan. That is a vote of confidence. It is also a risk that now sits with the supplier, not only with the customer.

“The need for AI compute continues to grow at an extraordinary pace,” said Hock Tan, Broadcom’s chief executive1. Perhaps. You do not need to share the enthusiasm to admire the paperwork. A lease with a lien and a guarantor is old machinery, the kind that financed aircraft and railway wagons, applied to a new asset.

The same Monday, Meta said it wants to raise up to $95 billion in shares and SpaceX signed a roughly $40 billion equipment lease for chips2. The question for this week’s earnings is no longer whether money is available. It is how much of the bill sits where you can see it. Nothing here is investment advice.

What to watch

  • Whether other chip makers copy the structure: a vehicle, a lease, and the supplier's support for the value of its own equipment1.
  • Alphabet and Microsoft on Wednesday, Amazon and Intel on Thursday, and how much of their spending now sits off their own balance sheets2.

When the seller guarantees what the goods will be worth, the buyer has learned something about the seller's confidence. So has the lender.
