MARKETS · DESK NOTE

Seoul printed its numbers, then Seoul bought

Korea's economy grew 1.0% in the third quarter, more than three times the central bank's August forecast. The Kospi rose about 4%. Brent slipped below $115 and the US ten-year sat just under 5%.

Asia opened Tuesday on Monday’s New York mood. The S&P 500 had closed 0.7% higher, the Nasdaq 100 1.1%, and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index 2.8%, its sharpest daily gain since 21 September4. By early trading South Korea’s Kospi was up more than 4% and Japan’s Nikkei about 1.9%1. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 1.2%1.

The headlines credit Anthropic’s prospectus and Meta’s $95 billion share sale1. The more useful number came from the Bank of Korea at breakfast: real GDP grew 1.0% in the third quarter, 3.4% on the year2. In August the bank had forecast 0.3%3. Exports rose 2.3%, led by semiconductors, and investment in equipment, including chip-making machinery, rose 4.1%3. Desk arithmetic: the outcome was more than three times the bank’s own forecast.

Read the small print too. Private consumption fell 0.2%; the government added more to growth than households did3. Korea is growing on chips and state spending, not on shoppers. That is a sturdy invoice, but a narrow one.

Elsewhere the board was quiet. Brent crude eased 0.7% to $114.95 a barrel as mediators worked on the Iran war1. The US ten-year Treasury yield was steady at 4.992%1. The yen sat at 157.72 per dollar ahead of Friday’s Bank of Japan decision, and gold at $4,013.70 an ounce1. European futures dipped 0.23%1.

You will hear a great deal this week about what AI might earn. On Tuesday a central bank published what one chip economy actually produced. Hold on to the second kind of number. Nothing here is investment advice.

What to watch

  • Whether the Kospi holds the gain after Wednesday evening, when Alphabet and Microsoft report4.
  • Brent near $115: a strategist at ATFX Global says any threat to physical exports could send it back towards $1201.
Desk comment

A rally on a filing is a mood. A rally on a national account is a receipt. Tuesday in Seoul had a little of both.
