The average stock had a better day than the index
Thursday's headline said plus 0.33%. The equal-weighted index said plus 1.36%. The difference is where the money went.
On Wednesday the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.88% and the S&P 500 1.11%, after US consumer prices for September came in hotter than expected1. On Thursday the S&P 500 rose 0.33% to 7,744.062. That is the number on the evening news. It is not the number that describes the day.
The equal-weighted S&P 500 rose 1.36% and the Russell 2000 of smaller companies 1.38%2. Healthcare gained 1.86% and financials 1.38%, while Nvidia fell 1.84% and the semiconductor ETF 1.04%2. The Dow, which owns less of the AI trade, rose 1.08%3. Money did not leave the market. It left the most crowded room in it.
Line chart of the daily US 10-year Treasury yield since October 2025. It is about 4% in late 2025, between roughly 4% and 4.7% through the spring, rises through the summer, closes at 5.00% for the first time on 15 September 2026, peaks at 5.31% on 5 October, is 5.19% on 14 October and 5.10% on 15 October, the latest value.

The reason has a number. The 10-year Treasury yield closed at 5.00% on 15 September, its first close at that level this year, and at 5.31% on 5 October4. A builder that borrows to put up data centres pays for that number before it sells a single hour of compute. On Thursday, after producer prices rose 6.3% on the year, the highest since December 2022, yields actually fell, briefly below 5.04%2. Rates gave the market a day off, not a verdict.
The desk reading: a rotation is not a crash, and a cap-weighted index is a weighting decision, not a census. If your pension or savings plan tracks the headline index, you own the crowded room in its full size. That is a fact about your portfolio, not a recommendation to change it.
What to watch
The index is a weighting decision. The market is everyone else.
