Ebola readiness is a checklist, and checklists work

No cases in the WHO's eastern Mediterranean region, and 22 countries preparing as if there might be. That is what prevention looks like from the outside: nothing.

The World Health Organization is stepping up Ebola preparedness across its eastern Mediterranean region, 22 countries and territories spanning parts of Africa, Asia and Europe, with priority support for Djibouti, Somalia and Sudan1. It follows deadly outbreaks caused by the Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, and a confirmed case in Kenya linked to the DRC1.

There have been no Ebola cases in the region so far1. Between July and September WHO sent missions to the three priority countries to test surveillance, laboratories, infection control, case management and emergency coordination, and it is closing gaps with training, supplies and simulation exercises1.

The hard part is honest in the text: gaps remain in early detection, lab confirmation and protective equipment, and conflict and restricted access make everything harder in countries already in humanitarian emergency1. WHO’s Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, called the region “the epicentre of global humanitarian need” this week1.

This is the desk’s favourite kind of health story, because it is all machinery: checklists, contingency plans, traveller guidance, a simulation run before the real thing. It does not make headlines when it works, and that is the point.

What to watch

  • Laboratory confirmation capacity in Djibouti, Somalia and Sudan: WHO names it as a remaining gap.
  • Any case linked to the Bundibugyo outbreaks in DR Congo and Uganda outside the current countries.

The best health news is the outbreak that never makes the front page. Somebody filled in a form for that.
