A record for the DAX, a fifth warning for Rheinmetall: one index, two ledgers
The index cleared its August high on Thursday. Its biggest defence name fell about 15% on the same screen, because an order the customer has not yet signed cannot be booked.
The DAX set a new record on Thursday. It rose above its August high of 26,618.74 points in the morning4; finanzen.net put the new high at 26,692.903. By the afternoon it was up 0.67% at 26,6152. Analysts quoted by dpa-AFX credited the clarity of the US midterm result; one called it the possible starting shot of a year-end rally, and in the same breath warned of Middle East, inflation and interest-rate risks “under the surface”3.
At the bottom of the same index sat its best-known defence name. Rheinmetall shares fell more than 18% at one point and were down 15.2% at €850.90 in the afternoon, the lowest since February 20252. They have almost halved this year and are close to 60% below the record of €2,008 set a little over a year ago2.
What actually changed. Not demand. Third-quarter sales rose 32% to €3.149 billion and operating profit 62% to €553 million1. What changed was the calendar. The Bundeswehr’s Arminius order to modernise its Boxer fleet is now unlikely to be placed in 2026, so the down payments and sales tied to it move into next year; batches of artillery shells will also be accepted later than planned1. Full-year sales are now put at about €13.2 billion instead of €13.7 to €14.2 billion, the operating margin at about 18.5% instead of about 19%1. Desk arithmetic: against the old midpoint of €13.95 billion, that is €0.75 billion, or about 5.4%, pushed out of the year.
Why the market was harsh anyway. JPMorgan’s analyst called it the fifth sales or profit warning in eleven months2. The finance chief, Klaus Neumann, said the delays lie entirely in the customer’s processes and expects Arminius in the first quarter of 20272. Citigroup’s analyst sees orders delayed rather than vanished; Berenberg’s worries about medium-term estimates2. Both can be right. The backlog is about €78 billion2. Desk arithmetic: that is roughly six years of this year’s reduced sales.
The lesson for you is a dull one, and therefore useful. A record index tells you what the average share did. A company’s guidance tells you when a signature lands on an invoice. Procurement offices run on their own clock, and no rally speeds it up. Nothing here is investment advice.
What to watch
- The Xetra close at 17:30 CET; the 19:30 update carries the settled figure.
- Rheinmetall's capital markets day on 26 and 27 November, where the finance chief says he will give detail on 2027 and the medium-term targets2.
An index records the average mood. A purchase order records a signature. Only one of them can be postponed by a ministry.
