ECDC's Monday tally: eight provinces, and the follow-up rate still short

As of 18 October the European centre counted 9,455 confirmed Bundibugyo cases and 4,561 deaths in Congo, with Nord Ubangi newly listed. Contact follow-up remains the dull lever that decides the map.

ECDC refreshed its Congo Bundibugyo page on Monday afternoon1. As of 18 October (data to 17 October) it reported 9,455 confirmed cases and 4,561 related deaths; 925 patients hospitalised in isolation; 2,530 recoveries among those who tested positive1. Since the previous ECDC update on 16 October (data to 14 October), an additional 178 confirmed cases and 83 deaths had been recorded1.

Nord Ubangi is now listed: two confirmed cases from Wapinda health zone, bringing affected provinces to eight1. Ituri remains by far the heaviest burden (6,918 cases); 66 of 178 health zones across the eight provinces are affected1. About 80% of identified case contacts were under follow-up1 — still short of the response’s own 95% discipline that this morning’s edition underlined from Congo’s SitRep.

The constructive habit is unchanged: watch the follow-up rate and the laboratory throughput, not only the shaded map. An eighth province is serious. A contact seen today is how a ninth is avoided.

What to watch

  • Tomorrow's ECDC weekday refresh and Congo's next SitRep PDF.
  • Contact follow-up share versus the 95% operational target.
  • Whether Nord Ubangi stays at two cases or seeds a ninth health-zone cluster.
Desk comment

A new province on a map is a logistics problem. Follow-up is how you shrink it.
